I chose Spanish classes at Cambio because of their role as an NGO. As a long time supporter of another NGO in Guatemala, I'm aware how much of a positive impact can be made in the lives of women and children by a few dedicated NGOs. I liked that Cambio both employs Guatemalans (as Spanish teachers, host families, assistants and teachers in the NGO's schools) and serves Guatemalan children and families with their schools and outreach programs. Before coming here, we did 4 Skype lessons. We spent the first 2 weeks living with a host family set up by Cambio. The home was lovely and the home made meals delicious. Our rooms were simple, clean, comfortable and the shower was amazing. In total we took three weeks of Spanish lessons. The classes were interesting. My daughters enjoyed increasing their vocabulary using games and flash cards andI learned about daily life in Guatemala, the importance of family here, religious traditions, etc.

I had a wonderful experience at Cambio Spanish School. It offers one-on-one lessons in a beautiful courtyard atmosphere. My teacher Rita was excellent. She was happy to design lessons around my specific requests and when I didn’t have a request, she always had a very organized lesson plan. We did Skype lessons for one month and in-person lessons for two months and I would definitely continue lessons with her in the future if I have the opportunity. I feel like I learned more Spanish in three months with Cambio than I did in three years in high school. I also love that the profits from Cambio go to Niños de Guatemala, an outstanding organization that I volunteered for and have seen its results first hand!

When I first arrived in Antigua, my Spanish was non existent. Of course the basic “dónde está el baño,” and “cerveza, por favor” will get you far in Antigua itself, but I quickly realized that if I wanted to make a difference in the lives of these children, I needed to dedicate at least a little of my spare time to studying Spanish. Okay, four hours a day wasn’t exactly little, but classes with Cambio quickly became a part of my day to look forward to and not so much the annoying task one would think it to be. Dare I say it is actually fun seeing how quickly you can apply what you are learning in the Cambio classroom to the classrooms of El Porvenir and Nuestro Futuro? Not to mention, studying in an outdoor garden isn’t exactly a chore. Through NDG I have I have gained lifelong friendships, immeasurable memories, and a greater appreciation for the world around me.
